About Michigan's Otherside

Michigan’s Otherside is run by Amberrose Hammond & Tom Maat. After getting tired of running a paranormal team with the usual array of dysfunctional people, group dynamics and going into strange people’s homes that didn’t want to believe you if you told them you didn’t think their house was haunted, they decided to take other paranormal routes. Many people think Michigan’s Otherside is a “team” but it’s not. It’s a website and creative outlet for Michigan’s paranormal world and the people who work to discover its secrets.

Tom started a career as a paramedic in 1975-1980, dealing with death on a first hand basis. The next 22 years were spent as a project manager, traveling to all 48 contiguous states, giving him the opportunity to observe diverse differences in cultures and belief systems. He has been interested and studying the paranormal for over 38 years.

As a young child, he could remember having feelings of not being alone whenever he was in a room by himself. During the summer of 1971, he had an experience while meditating, which started him on the path of Shamanic studies and practices, which resulted in being certified as an Ama Deus Shamanic Healer in 2004. Throughout the years, he has been searching for information about the paranormal through personal investigations, books, lectures and numerous paranormal organizations. In 2003 he was instrumental in the creation of the Great Lakes Paranormal Research Organization based in Michigan. He has appeared in newspaper articles, has participated in several radio programs dealing with the paranormal and appeared on an episode of A&E’s “Extreme Paranormal,” a two-night event the network aired in 2009. Tom became a statewide representative for the American Ghost Society in June of 2007 and he briefly joined the Michigan chapter of MUFON (Mutual UFO Network) in October 2008 through 2009 to gain some experience in the UFO world.

Amberrose has been interested in the paranormal for a few lifetimes. Starting from a little kid, she read and watched anything that had to do with ghosts and the paranormal. One night in October of 2000, she was sitting at work bored and thinking to herself how even more boring Michigan is. Seeing it was October, she hopped on the computer and did a search on Michigan and haunted places, not really expecting to find much. Low and behold, she found tons of haunted places and stories and also discovered the wonderful world of ghost hunting. Michigan wasn’t boring after all.

Since then she has worked with a number of ghost hunting teams around the state, continued to learn any and everything about the paranormal world and helped form The Great Lakes Paranormal Research Organization in 2003 and launched “ Michigan’s Otherside” in 2007. She traveled extensively from 2006-2009 visiting haunted locations around the United States. UFO’s are the only thing that scare her. Bring on possession, apparitions and demons, but keep the little green guys on their own planets.

Her real passion is researching and learning about the history behind legends and hauntings. Amberrose is also an avid cemetery and local history enthusiast. She published her first book with The History Press in 2009 called, “Ghosts & Legends of Michigan’s West Coast,” and lectures during the fall season on Michigan’s paranormal world. She is currently working on her second book.
