“It’s just a game…isn’t it?"
Does that little line sound familiar to you? It should if you’ve ever played with the controversial and ever mysterious Ouija board. Is it just a game as the slogan says? Many people are terrified of this game put out by Parker Brothers and won’t even touch one much less be in the same room with one. Others scoff at the board, saying it’s nothing more than a stupid game or that its messages are caused from very small movements in the hand muscles and the unconscious mind. I don’t know what sounds more far fetched: my unconscious mind moving something, or a spirit in the vicinity.
Regardless of how terrified or transfixed you are by the board, everyone seems to have a Ouija board story to share from some point in their lives, usually when they were kids.
A typical Ouija situation follows something along these lines:
Scene: Sleepover party, kegger. You choose.
Kid #1: What are we going to ask it…
Kid #2: Let’s ask who we are talking to.
::they put their hands lightly on the planchette and ask what spirit is in the room. The planchette starts to move::
Kid #1: Are you moving it?
kid #2: Looks up at Kid #1 and says…::
Kid #2: No I’m not moving it! You’re moving it!
Kid #1: No I’m for real. I’m not moving it.
::they watch the planchette start to spell out a name::
Kid #1: S – A – T – A – N….OH MY GOD! #$%2 (expletives follow)
::they throw the board off their laps and run away to tell everyone.
Does this type of scene sound familiar to anyone? I can even remember playing with it when I was little and the dumb thing spelled out Satan. But was it really Satan who we were speaking too? Most likely not, but hard-core believers of the Ouija being made of pure evil will say that anything that comes through the board is demonic or something of the devil.
